The first Jackson Brodie novel: literary crime from the prizewinning, number-one bestselling author of Big Sky andTranscription.
Book blurb
Cambridge is sweltering, during an unusually hot summer. To Jackson Brodie, former police inspector turned private investigator, the world consists of one accounting sheet - Lost on the left, Found on the right - and the two never seem to balance.
Surrounded by death, intrigue and misfortune, his own life haunted by a family tragedy, Jackson attempts to unravel three disparate case histories and begins to realise that in spite of apparent diversity, everything is connected...
My thoughts
This is the first one of the Jackson Brodie books by the author. He is a PI who looks into cold cases of which he has three to contend with in this book.
Kate Atkinson writes beautifully and ensures that the mysteries surrounding each case are well plotted.
Jackson is not a prominent character at the beginning but we learn about him as we go along. I found this an interesting treatment of the lead character and that his investigation took more of a backseat to that of understanding how those around the missing characters coped. Being the first of a series this is something that I enjoyed although in future books I would like to read more of what Jackson does.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone who likes to read crime fiction from a more unusual perspective. It's also one to consider if you're looking to start a new series.
