A new act that is able to come around and create any sort of change is something that demands attention. Whether it's being particularly deadly at their craft or attempting something new that actually works, it's always a fascinating thing to witness when a new band comes around and starts off with a real victory. In the vastness of the dense underground, such efforts are few and far between with few able to deliver at such a relatively high level, but it's every now and then that something rises to the surface that really catches the eye. Despite having more than enough room for improvement, it's with their first EP that Cerulean already promises great things.
It's already hard enough for any new act to put forth something that can really capture and keep the attention of listeners, but to add into that mix a level of clear understanding over their particular sound such that you're left well-impressed just a few tracks in is to craft something very interesting by all accounts. Without a shred of compromising, Cerulean achieves precisely that with the five tracks of "Carrion Angel". Constantly shifting in its approach but never once less than menacing in its presence to make damn sure the listener never gets too comfortable throughout the experience, this is what it means to put yourself in the midst of contorting black-death metal that is always looking for new ways to slice flesh from bone and rend your very soul. Just as capable of riffs as they are immense displays of complex guitarwork, "Carrion Angel" is chaotically fascinating to witness from virtually every angle. While sometimes a tad clunky here and there, it needs to be remembered that this is but the first cohesive piece from Cerulean which, given everything else that adorns the work, should be found all the more impressive with it being really the one and only drawback I can find throughout the whole listener. This is a promising launch for Cerulean into the greater underground by all means with this EP delivering far more than what I think many would give the EP credit for at a first glance.
The product of clear passion and the desire to truly disorient the listener via ways of complexity and uncertainty, "Carrion Angel" has much to boast in its mere five tracks even with Cerulean having a long way to go. Even so, Cerulean is already hard at work producing a follow-up to this eviscerating creation, and with all that was brought to life here I can't see its successor being anything less than a success if I had to go with my gut.
