In an effort to continue the review catch up here are a few more from this month
Saga Volume 11
Book 6 of 2024
Saga from Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples continues and the fleeing family continues to find their place in the universe. I love this series, but if you follow this page at all you probably know that already.
Topographia Hibernica - Blindboy Boatclub
Book 7
The third collection of stories from Blindboy Boatclub, and probably my favourite of the three. A really good collection, very close to excellent but there were one or two here that I didn't like, though my friend Jason disagrees with me. The highlight for me was the story Pamela Fags which I thought was fantastic.
The Night Shift - Alex Finlay
Book 8
The Night Shift by Alex Finlay - one town, two mass murders, 15 years apart. Plenty of similarities between the two, but are they really connected? Alex Finlay takes us through the mystery in excellent fashion. A proper "addictive" audiobook that I didn't want to tear myself away from it kept me guessing until the last few moments.
Waiting to Be Arrested at Night - Tahir Hamut Izgil
Book 9
A book best described by the last section of it's blurb;
"Waiting to Be Arrested at Night is the story of the political, social, and cultural destruction of Tahir Hamut Izgil's homeland. Among leading Uyghur intellectuals and writers, he is the only one known to have escaped China since the mass internments began. His book is a call for the world to awaken to the unfolding catastrophe, and a tribute to his friends and fellow Uyghurs whose voices have been silenced."
It is a fascinating read, as someone who had no idea about this situation it was quite eye opening. The fact that some of the events that happen in this are less than 10 years old really beggars belief, and highlights just how quickly things can change if those in power deem it fit. Recommended reading.
Miss Kim Knows - Cho Nam-Joo
Book 10
Given that I loved Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 I decided to ignore the fact that I thoroughly disliked Saha and give the author another chance. I listened to Miss Kim Knows and found the stories quite free flowing and easy to listen to, but most of them weren't exactly memorable. One story that sticks out was about a lady who wanted to visit somewhere where she could see the Northern Lights, as she recalls loving them as a child. This was brilliant, the rest less so. Glad I gave it a listen but I am still left wondering if this author is one I will return to or not.
