It's weird to have liked a book and still somehow been a little let down by it.
Divine Rivals is somehow both a typical and atypical book for me. It's pretty cozy (despite being about war). It's a romance (though very chaste). It's fantasy (though the fantastical elements are largely absent).
We follow two teenagers dealing with life disappointments the way anyone would: by becoming journalists.
The title says it all. They're rivals. Of course they're going to fall in love with each other.
The good: There's a charm to the book. The characters, especially Iris, feel worth following. There's a good banter.
The less good: Not a lot actually happens. It's a lot of glances and childish behavior. There's a friggin' war going on. The latter part of the book is when things start happening.
I've got the sequel in the queue, but I also am not too terribly excited going forward. It's like a cheeseburger too many people raved about. I was going to enjoy it either way, but I just didn't feel like it lived up to the hype.
