Happy New Year everyone! Sorry for being a bit behind on posting, I've been super busy, but I'll be aiming to share more exciting new stuff over the coming weeks.
For now, here are my top picks for new books to watch out for in 2024:
The Opposite of Murder By Sophie Hannah
Sophie Hannah is back with another exciting premiss for a new book. From the author of chilling titles like Little Face and many others, her upcoming novel is a strange tale about a woman who confesses to a murder she can't possibly have committed. She has a cast-iron alibi: at the time of the murder, she was confessing to the police. It sounds like a great plot to another gripping tale from the modern Queen Of Crime.
Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder by Salman Rushdie
In 2022, renowned writer Salman Rushdie was attacked with a knife while onstage giving a talk. As a result, he sustained serious injuries, including the loss of an eye. In Knife: Meditations After An Murder, Rushdie looks back over the incident that changed his life forever. It is said to be a discussion on his art and how his relationship with it- and outlook on life- changed after this terrifying experience. I've always been intrigued by Rushdie's work and am eager to learn his side of the story following this terrifying ordeal.
The Queen Of Poisons By Robert Thorogood
The third in the Marlow Murder Club series from Death In Paradise creator Robert Thorogood, The Queen Of Poisons sees members of the club attending a council meeting, in the hope of getting a personal proposal through, when the Mayor dies suddenly and spectacularly. Suspecting poison, the police invite the club to investigate as private citizens. When poison is detected, the women are forced to explore all the possibilities, including the notion that the Mayor wasn't the intended target or that someone else could be at risk. I liked the first Marlow Murder Club novel, and although I wasn't as enamoured by the second book in the series, I'm eager to see what the next instalment brings.
Miss Austen Investigates By Jessica Bull
I've seen a lot of hype around Miss Austen Investigates, which is due to be published at the start of the year, and I have to say, if the book is as good as it seems, it could potentially be the start of an interesting new cosy crime series. The book reimagines Jane Austen's life as a budding socialite turned sleuth who finds a body in a closet at a house party in 1795. It has the opportunity to go far, with its quaint setting and established protagonist, so it'll be interesting to see if the novel lives up to its potential.
Rabbit Heart: A Mother's Murder, A Daughter's Story By Kristine S. Ervin
At just 8 years old, Kristine S. Ervin's mother, Kathy Sue Engle, was abducted from a mall parking lot in Oklahoma, taken to a nearby oil field and brutally murdered. With limited memories of her mother, Ervin sets out in Rabbit Heart to uncover the truth with the help of years of research. For anyone who loves true crime documentaries or podcasts, this could be an ideal book for you.
In This Economy?: How Money and Markets Really Work By Kyla Scanlon
An important read in these times of economic uncertainty, In This Economy? is a vital read from a financial educator who specialises in breaking down seemingly complex topics. Fo those who aren't financially literate and want to be, this book could be incredibly helpful. As someone who's recently had to start learning about personal finance, and fast, I think this could be one of the most valuable educational non-fiction reads of 2024.
These are just my picks of the books I've seen announced that are coming this year; I'm sure there will be even more I'll find out about going forward and I'm excited to read them all. If you've got your own picks you'd like to mention please share them in the comments section- I love hearing your suggestions. For now, I hope you enjoy the New Year's celebrations!
