THE BISON, THE BLOODY BISON WON IT.
Just to show you how much this award has been dominated by New South Wales players in the last 20 years:
Marsh is the only the third non-New South Welshman in the last 20 years to win the award; Ricky Ponting (Tasmania) won it 4 times (2009 was tied with Michael Clarke), and Mitchell Johnson in 2014 was the last until tonight, as the award was dominated by Steve Smith, David Warner, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc.
Still, this is me shifting goalposts, because Shane Watson was born in Ipswich, but won the Medal twice while playing state cricket for New South Wales, so once again Watto will be copping it.
Another fun fact - Marsh is the first WA-born player to win the AB Medal, however he's the third to win it while playing state cricket for WA...
The simple answer being that Adam Gilchrist (2003) was born in New South Wales before he saw the light, and Mitchell Johnson (2014) was/is a Queenslander, but moved to WA in 2008 and has been based there ever since, writing the occasional column about David Warner.
In fact, I'll go one step further - This is the entire list of people not playing for New South Wales to win the Alan Border Medal, which has now had 25 editions:
Matthew Hayden (QLD, 2002)
Adam Gilchrist (WA, 2003)
Ricky Ponting (TAS, 2004, 2006-07, 2009)
Mitchell Johnson (WA, 2014)
Mitchell Marsh (WA, 2024)
