Let the new (music) year begin!!! Did you all have a relaxing break? Catch up on any great albums you had missed?
If you're here, then you're like us and already looking forward to what new musical goodies 2024 is going to bring us. And while there is no guarantee that what is listed below is definitely make it out in this new year (there are a number of repeat offenders who have been on previous years' lists), but there is a strong likelihood of the world being gifted these future treasured albums in the next 360 or so days. And as more information comes in, I will certainly update the list.
Social Distortion - TBD (Release TBD)
After battling cancer and going through six weeks of chemo, Social Distortion frontman MikeNess has recovered. While the band is starting the year with a tour with label mates Bad Religion to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of their debut album, Ness has said in a recent interview with Matt Pinfield that following the tour in April, he will be recording vocals for the new album, with hopes of it coming out towards the end of 2024. Being that they are one of the best rock and roll bands out there, this is definitely one to not just be excited about, but to cheer upon its release.
2. Green Day - Saviors (January 19, 2024)
After a detour into Prince-esque 80's rock and power pop on their last album, the band is back to what they do best - brash political polemics and wry, snotty pop-punk that is as smart as it is catchy. First single "The American Dream is Killing Me" recalls the band circa-American Idiot, while follow up "Look Ma, No Brains" is pure Dookie-era GD. This is likely to be a return to form for the band, and thankfully we won't have to wait long to get our ears on it!
3. The Last Dinner Party - Prelude to Ecstasy (February 2, 2024)
One of the buzziest bands out of Britain last year, I can assure you the group lives up to the hype. Based on the four songs already released, including the revelatory single "Nothing Matters", TheLast Dinner Party are poised to do what Wet Leg did a couple years prior, and perhaps even surpass that excellent group. Showing once again that the future of alternative rock is definitely female, I expect this album to be all over critics' "best of" lists and to be rocking festivals around the world in the new year.
4. Bleachers - Bleachers (March 8, 2024)
Jack Antonoff can pretty much do no wrong. Whether he's producing albums by Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey, or releasing his own music as Bleachers, he just seems to be on a never-ending winning streak. Maybe that's because the former fun. band member is just that damn talented? He can release E-Street Band style rave-ups like "Modern Girl", or more vibey tracks like the album's title track, and it's all just good. His live shows are a blast, and all his previous albums have been fantastic, so I'm guessing this one will be no different.
5. Pearl Jam - TBD (Release date TBD)
Not many details are known about the 90's grunge rockers' new album. Andrew Watt is producing again, and according to Mike McCready, it leans on the heavier side. Frankly, details aren't needed. Pearl Jam are simply a great rock n' roll band, and whatever they release demand to be heard.
6. Vampire Weekend - TBD (Release date TBD)
The follow-up to their 2019 double album Father of the Bride, Vampire Weekend announced at the end of last year that their fifth full-length album was complete. In previous interviews, frontman Ezra Koenig has hinted at raga influences, but whatever that leads to I'm sure will be filtered through their immaculate brand of bubbly indie rock. The group's output is always interesting, so I'm sure this next release will be no different.
7. Wargirl - TBD (Release date TBD)
While not a household name, Los Angeles' Wargirl are one of those groups that reek of cool and style. Catching them at a small show at Gold Digger's last year, the band premiered two new songs, full of their signature classic R&B/funk/rock fusion sound. This is a band that can get anyone dancing on the floor, melding perfect throwback grooves with modern eclecticism. This will be a fun one.
8. 311 - TBD (Release date TBD)
In an interview with Scott Lipp, Nick Hexum mentioned the band had been recording and were even thinking a new single may drop last December. While that didn't come to pass, the band is clearly in active mode, having filled in for the injured Red Hot Chili Peppers at KROQ's Almost Acoustic Xmas. The band is always evolving, finding new melodic flourishes to imbue into their agro-rock meets reggae meets psychedelic fusion. 311 have kept rocking for 30 years for good reason.
9. Sum 41 - Heaven :x: Hell (March 24, 2024)
Billed as the band's final album, Canadian rockers Sum 41 are going out with a very loud bang. A double album paying tribute to both sounds the band has explored in its career, pop-punk and metal, the group has already shared the catchy "Landmines" and the ripping "Rise Up". Just based on the quality of both these tracks, it sounds like the band is going to go out on a high note.
10. American Aquarium - TBD (Release date TBD)
BJ Barham's critically beloved Americana troupe can always be counted on to release the kind of intelligent and inspiring mix of Southern rock, country and folk that can inspire critical thinking as easily as drunken sing-alongs. He also can just as easily rip your heart to shreds with his detailed, melancholy storytelling. He and his band don't release bad albums, so except their next one to be another one to hail.
11. Frank Turner - TBD (Release date TBD)
The folk-punk troubadour's last album, FTHC, was one of our favorites of the year, showcasing some of the best songwriting Turner has ever done. He's hinted in social posts that we can expect new music from him coming up, so money is on a new album of some sort in the near future.
12. Reese McHenry - TBD (Release date TBD)
An Indy Review favorite, the powerhouse soul rock singer/songwriter has been back out there touring, recently opening for Lydia Loveless, so we're hoping she is clear from the health problems that have plagued her for far too long. A new album from the artist would make 2024 all the more special.
13. J Mascis - What We Do Now (February 2, 2024)
With Dinosaur Jr., J Mascis is able to blowout your ear drums with blisteringly loud indie rock. In his solo projects, he can send you drifting off into waves of acoustic euphoria. New ones "Can't Believe We're Here" and "Set Me Down" swing with pop energy, while Mascis' vocals are about as jubilant and his folksy tenor gets.
14. Better Than Ezra - TBD (Release date TBD)
The 90's alt rockers came back in 2023 with two new songs ("Mystified" and "Contact High") with a promise of a new full-length to come. The band always delivers something fresh for their fans, so can't wait to see what else they have in store for 2024.
15. Mumford & Sons - TBD (Release date TBD)
After taking a break to focus on his solo album, Marcus Mumford has gotten the band back together for a new album from the multiplatinum folk rock troupe. The group has already previewed one new song in a live performance with new folk wunderkind Noah Kahan, and I'm sure there's more to come.
16. Sea Girls - TBD (Release date TBD)
British pop rock band Sea Girls made a lasting impression with their album Homesick, and the new singles they've been dropping to preview their next album have all the bittersweet melodies and incessant hooks that made the previous release so stunning. Hopefully America takes better notice of this new album than they did of the last one.
17. Strung Out - TBD (Release date TBD)
One of the best California punk bands of the last twenty+ years, the Jason Cruz-led group have been teasing recording sessions via Instagram, so there's a good chance a new album is coming from them in the new year.
Now that he's not bogged down in the blink-182 machine, Matt Skiba has been able to return to his baby with Daniel Andriano, Alkaline Trio. While the title-track first single and second "Bad Time" haven't quite lived up to their past best work, I remain confident the group's full release will still be packed with memorable goth-pop-punk smashes.
19. The Vaccines - Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations (January 12, 2024)
Another one of Britain's premiere modern rock bands are planning to make a bloody good return next year, dropping a new album of catchy Britrock like first single "Heartbreak Kid", and will be hitting the road with The Kooks to promote it. I can't wait.
20. The Cure - Songs of a Lost World (Release date TBD)
At this point the new Cure album is a running joke almost equal with Chinese Democracy. After a huge hit tour and tons of goodwill from his battle with Ticketmaster, you would think the band and label would have been clamoring to get this album out to the public, but for whatever reason it remains a mystery to all (but probably Robert Smith) when we'll finally get this long-teased collection of new music from the goth rock kings.
