I don't think I've written a new post yet in 2024...so Happy New Year! I definitely miss being on winter break and having lots of time to read, think, and sleep. I often wish I could be a stay-at-home cat mom! Alas, I can't, and so writing of any kind has been sitting on the back burner since I've gone back to work. But! I am here today with a new review of a great book I read last month: Raiders of the Lost Heart by Jo Segura.
Thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Pub for this free digital copy in exchange for an honest review. This book is available now!
Synopsis (from Goodreads)
Rival archaeologists must team up on a secret Aztec expedition, or it could leave their careers—and hearts—in ruins.
Archaeologist Dr. Socorro "Corrie" Mejía has a bone to pick. Literally.
It's been Corrie's life goal to lead an expedition deep into the Mexican jungle in search of the long-lost remains of her ancestor, Chimalli, an ancient warrior of the Aztec empire. But when she is invited to join an all-expenses-paid dig to do just that, Corrie is sure it's too good to be true...and she's right.
As the world-renowned expert on Chimalli, by rights Corrie should be leading the expedition, not sharing the glory with her disgustingly handsome nemesis. But Dr. Ford Matthews has been finding new ways to best her since they were in grad school. Ford certainly isn't thrilled either—with his life in shambles, the last thing he needs is a reminder of their rocky past.
But as the dig begins, it becomes clear they'll need to work together when they realize a thief is lurking around their campsite, forcing the pair to keep their discoveries—and lingering attraction—under wraps. With money-hungry artifact smugglers, the Mexican authorities, and the lies between them closing in, there's only one way this all ends—explosively.
My Thoughts
First: this book has everything an adventure-loving romance gal could want: an archaeological dig, a Mexican jungle setting, waterfalls...and two hot rivals who absolutely should be together.
I loved this book! Corrie is such a badass and I want to be her when I grow up. I love her determination to be respected and recognized for her mind and talent in the archaeological world, rather than just for her looks. She knows she's one of the best in the biz and wants to be treated as such. And Ford? Well, for one, he has the perfect archaeologist name (in my opinion). He smolders and smirks and I swoon. He truly respects Corrie's intelligence and cares for her, but consistently puts his foot in his mouth. Their chemistry is *chef's kiss* and I would absolutely read another book about them having archaeological and spicy adventures together. 🔥 The end had me racing through the pages because I had to know what happened. Plus, the setting and descriptions are so fun!
If you love The Mummy, Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones, and Romancing the Stone...read this. It is such a fun read and I want more! I hope this trend in adventure archaeological romances continues because they're all I want to read. 🥰
That's all for today, Reader Friends! Let me know what you have been reading lately!
