A Place for Vanishing by Ann Fraistat
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
TW: Suicide/self harm
After Libby has an emotional and mental breakdown, her mother decides it's time for a fresh start for their little family, moving Libby, her younger sister, Vivi, and her to her childhood home, which has sat empty for decades. Libby's mother has never wanted anything to do with the house since she moved out as a young girl after an accident which killed her parents, and once the family moves in, Libby realizes why. The house feels very "off" and is filled with creepy imagery. Plus, it's considered the neighborhood "haunted house." With the help of a new friend in town, Libby vows to get to the bottom of the house's secrets, even if it means risking her life to save her family.
This book is a YA thriller, and it definitely reads as a little more juvenile. The mystery isn't super complex, though it is pretty interesting to see as it plays out, because there is quite a bit of questions in regard to the reliability of the narrator. Then there's more questions that arise as certain things become more clear. But I won't spoil that part of things.
And tgere were some interesting twists here and there. Some I was able to guess, some I wasn't. My interest was kept until the end, though some of the final confrontation scene dragged slightly. But I wanted to see what happened, and the payoff was well worth it!
Maybe I just didn't like how much supernatural elements were mixed in? That's all I'll say. I wish some more was grounded in some form of realism/reality. But that's a personal preference, and may not be yours!
So if this sounds like something you would be interested in, go for it! It's a good book overall!
