I've been very slowly reading this series for almost 8 years now. What do you do when you know something is good but you don't have the urge to really read it?
Read it slowly I guess.
In about 15 months, I read this volume. That's not a good idea. It's bad enough I have trouble remembering series' characters (and now depend on the TV show as much as anything else to remember), but now even within volumes I'm having issues because I'll just pause in random spots.
But one more. Just one more to go.
Volume 9 is when a dark series manages to get darker. The bits and pieces I remember were good, but I also knew how it was going to end (1, because I used wikipedia when I shouldn't have years ago to begin the series, and 2, because the friggin' intro gives away the end of the volume, I suppose under the assumption that only people who already read the series would buy the collected volumes).
Either way, the good is still good: captivating artwork. Typography that becomes its own artwork. And the less good is still less good: This is not a casual read. There are too many callbacks to have puttered through the series as slowly as I have. It would have taken me less time to read the issues as they came out than it has for me to read the volumes that I bought all in one go (well, two. The first was on its own, but then it was cheaper to buy the rest as a boxed set).
I'm going to finish. Maybe even this year. But I will always be a little bummed out that I didn't just commit to reading it all in one go.
