In every given style throughout the vast spectrum of metal, there is always a few reaches within those territories that aren't travelled to often. Whether it be simply due to a lack of interest in giving such sounds more presence in the underground or that those within aren't doing much to catch the attention of the masses, to dive into those regions is always guaranteed to leave you with an experience that almost certainly can't be compared to many others in the underground. There are always plenty of acts trying to bring glory to those little pockets, but rarely do they swim upwards to the surface in order for us to behold their wonders right out of the gate. With its debut album, Unsouling sets itself apart immediately with this performance grabbing you by the throat and refusing to even contemplate releasing your spirit back upon the realms.
As much as we all love to think death metal revolves solely around horrific visages of differing breeds, there is so much to be uncovered within the sound should people simply attempt it. Spirituality and nature are themes that death metal simply does not tackle often enough with the more atmospheric side of the sound only recently coming to the surface to show us what all is still possible in a style that too many like to claim doesn't have much more to offer nowadays. Without so much as thinking to go in a different direction or wondering how it will all come together, Unsouling puts forth a formidable creation with its debut album, "Vampiric Spiritual Drain", that very much takes into consideration what happens when death metal is blended with the spirit itself and even takes on some elements of darkwave to really set it apart from much of what this corner of the underground has long been known for. Never once does this record forget to make its death metal known, however. For every moment that Unsouling pulls everything back to deliver a splendid blend that taps into the deepest reaches of the soul and attempting to tap into the ever-unknowable depths of nature, "Vampiric Spiritual Drain" seeks to decimate much of what it comes before.
Still raw by all accounts yet never once lacking in any bit of its approach, production, concept, or execution, this is a debut that cannot be considered anything less than utterly formidable right from the beginning with the talent already demonstrated by the mastermind of Unsouling in other acts like Feral Light on full display for the whole of the record. This is where death metal begins to twist and morph into something different, but not so much as to become wholly unrecognizable. The nuances and twists of "Vampiric Spiritual Drain" absolutely play in the favor of Unsouling with the prospect of further excavation into the unknown incredibly seductive.
