For my second post of the day I'm delighted to welcome you to my stop on the blog tour for The Spy Coast, first in a brand new series by bestselling author Tess Gerritsen. Thank you to Anne Cater and Bantam Press for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

About the book:

Maggie Bird is many things. A chicken farmer. A good neighbour. A seemingly average retiree living in the seaside town of Purity. She's also a darned good rifle shot. And she never talks about her past.

But when an unidentified body is left on Maggie's driveway, she knows it's a calling card from old times. It's been fifteen years since the failed mission that ended her career as a spy, and cost her far more than her job.

Step forward the 'Martini Club' - Maggie's silver-haired book group (to anyone who asks), and a cohort of former spies behind closed doors. With the help of her old friends - and always one step ahead of the persistent local cop - Maggie might still be able to save the life she's built.

The Spy Coast is the first novel in the Martini Club series.

About the author:

Bestselling author Tess Gerritsen is also a physician, and she brings to her novels her first-hand knowledge of emergency and autopsy rooms. Her thrillers starring homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles inspired the hit TV series Rizzoli & Isles.

But Tess's interests span far more than medicine and crime. As an anthropology student at Stanford University, she catalogued centuries-old human remains, and she continues to travel the world, driven by her fascination with ancient cultures and bizarre natural phenomena.

Tess has sold over 40 million copies of her books worldwide.

My Review:

The Spy Coast is the first in a brand new spy thriller series by bestselling author Tess Gerritsen. In a departure from her usual crime thrillers, in this series the author sets her sights on something a little bit different.

When a body is found on the driveway of Maggie Bird's home she knows it's a calling card from her old life. So step forward the 'Martini Club', a silver haired book club to anyone who asks, but which in reality is a cohort of retired spy's, who are still very much one step ahead of the persistent local police chief. With the help of her old friends will Maggie be able to save the brand new life she's built for herself?

The Spy Coast is an atmospheric and suspense filled thriller that had me gripped from beginning to end. Focusing on the friendships between retired spies, the story moves between the past and the present as we get to know protagonist Maggie. Told from several different points of view, as we begin to learn more about Maggie's past, it becomes clear that there's way more to this fearless woman than at first meets the eye…

Tess Gerritsen is an author at the top of her game and The Spy Coast is a strong start to what I hope will be another fantastic series of books. Very much a character driven story, The Spy Coast is a superb, easy to read spy thriller that I loved and is one that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

I can't wait to see where Tess Gerritsen is going to take the series from here!
