Viv's career with the notorious mercenary company Rackam's Ravens isn't going as planned.
Wounded during the hunt for a powerful necromancer, she's packed off against her will to recuperate in the sleepy beach town of Murk—so far from the action that she worries she'll never be able to return to it.
What's a thwarted soldier of fortune to do?
Spending her hours at a beleaguered bookshop in the company of its foul-mouthed proprietor is the last thing Viv would have predicted, but it may be both exactly what she needs and the seed of changes she couldn't possibly imagine.
Still, adventure isn't all that far away. A suspicious traveler in gray, a gnome with a chip on her shoulder, a summer fling, and an improbable number of skeletons prove Murk to be more eventful than Viv could have ever expected.

Review
I'm a little disappointed by this prequel; it seems to have lost the magic of the discovery that the first book had.
It's a good book, but I don't know; I found it unbalanced. The first part of the book was slow-paced. I know it's a cosy fantasy, but some parts were a little dreadful to read. Maybe I just didn't care about Viv's recovery from a battle against a necromancer. However, I liked to discover the characters who will help her in this recovery and who will leave a trace and help her make important decisions in the future. Also, as this is about a bookshop, books take a big part in this story, and even if sometimes I'm curious about them, here I found that they broke the pace of the book as for some, we had an excerpt as if we were reading it.
The second part is more suspenseful and dynamic than the first one. It still has the cosy fantasy vibe, but you have more actions, not only against a villain but also because you have a ton of renovations done in the bookshop. The romantic parts aren't really present as it's only a fling, but I nearly skipped those parts as I didn't care like in the previous book. However, it helps her to understand herself better, like any relationship, even if it's just a fling.
It's not a bad book; it's just a good book to read for its cosy atmosphere and to learn more about Viv's background.
