To push the envelope of your sound and actually succeed is to truly set yourself apart from the vast majority of your contemporaries. It's something that so many throughout the underground have been striving to achieve ever since the dawn of music with many rarely achieving such a lofty goal, but it is unto today that we're able to bear witness to acts keeping things more than spontaneous, fresh, and undeniably creative with their individual crafts. We could sit here for hours and discuss the bands that sparsely populate the underground that qualify as such, and Lord Dying more than deserves to be mentioned early in that conversation. Having done tremendous things with their previous album, it is here with their fourth that Lord Dying stands poised to do it yet again.
In every sense, the last work from Lord Dying, "Mysterium Tremendum", was a landmark effort the year that it came out for it not only saw Lord Dying going into a wildly different direction with immediate success, but it showed us that we were now dealing a high-level act that clearly knew what it was doing out of the gate. To follow up such a creation is what many bands buckle before and aren't able to pull off, but it would be an outright insult to insinuate that Lord Dying has done anything less than provide another excellent course in overwhelming mastery with all that's summoned within "Clandestine Transcendence". For the entirety of these twelve massive tracks, Lord Dying never holds so much as an iota of its craft behind. It quickly amounts to a terrifying form that is not easily pinned down by labels like progressive sludge metal no matter how apt or appropriate it might be for what's delivered within "Clandestine Transcendence" is the definition of fluid. Immense atmospheres, tremendous heaviness, gaudy colors, and an impactful story that threads itself way throughout the record, Lord Dying may very well have outdone itself yet again. This is a record that can only be truly likened to its predecessor for all that it dares to be and manages to achieve in one magnificent track after another. Each year always has a few select creations that kick things off with a real bang, and it's clear that Lord Dying is certainly one of those acts when it comes to 2024 beginning in earnest.
Where many take several albums and years to put out even one album of significant quality, Lord Dying has proven itself to be a consistent fount of otherworldly excellence with this album only cementing their status as a need-to-know name that immediately earns your respect in the realms of sludge metal and far beyond. While it was with "Mysterium Tremendum" that Lord Dying explored bold new territory, "Clandestine Transcendence" sees them conquer those very expanses to such an extent that tickles the mind, pulverizes the spirit, and rends flesh.
