Thistlefoot by GennaRose Nethercott
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is my book club's February pick, and I thought I'd also share my thoughts here.
This book enters the realm of the traditional Eastern European fairy tale figure Baba Yaga, traditionally depicted as a gnarled old woman, sometimes good, sometimes bad. In this book, she's literally depicted as a grandmother, to the two main characters in this book, who are forced to fight an evil force, back to finish a fight started with Baba Yaga a hundred years prior.
The POV shifts between the present day storyline with the siblings and the events of 100 years before, in a shtetl in Europe, where a pogrom is about to take place.
This book is beautifully written and the characters are well developed. I could almost picture everything as I made my way through the book, from the house on chicken legs, to the vibrant streets of New Orleans. Nethercott knows how to write, that's for sure.
And she knows how to throw in a good twist. There's so many details and story elements I never saw coming that were part of the story. It made the book so interesting and made me keep reading and turning pages, wanting to figure out what was going to happen. Because this was the kind of book where literally anything could happen.
But it is a long book, clocking in at about 450 pages. So it takes a bit to get through. Just be aware.
But if you're looking for a book you won't soon forget - this is the one.
I know I certainly won't!
