Front Post Treble Crochet Tutorial

Hello!

I'm here with a quick stitch tutorial today, the Front Post Treble Crochet, or FPtr! If you've worked a Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc), then it is almost exactly the same, just working a treble instead of a double crochet. So let's do it!

About Post Stitches

Post stitches are an advanced beginner stitch because they take one of the basic stitches (the treble crochet here) and change one little thing up in how it is worked to create something entirely different. Post stitches are decorative stitches used to create texture and visual interest in your crochet fabric, like cables, ribbing or more decorative raised patterns.

They are worked around the post of the stitch from the previous row, as opposed to the normal method of working through the top 'V' of the stitch. We say a post stitch is a "front" post stitch when the effect is to push the stitch to the front of the fabric and a post stitch is a "back" post stitch when the effect is to push the stitch to the back of the fabric.

There are both front and back post stitches for all the basics: single crochet, double crochet, etc. But today, I will be showing you the Front Post Treble Crochet (FPtr).

"Front" also indicates from which side of the fabric you should insert your hook around the post, which in this case means inserting it from front to back.  For the FPtr, you will work a treble crochet by inserting your hook from the front of your fabric into the gap before the post of the indicated stitch, around the back of it, then back out the front of your fabric through the gap on the other side.  This will push the stitch forward, or to the front of your fabric.

Step 1: Identify the post of the indicated stitch and note the gaps on either side of it between stitches.
Step 2: Yarn over twice then insert your hook into the gap before the post of the indicated stitch from the front of your fabric, around the back of the post, and out through the gap on the other side. Note how this pushes the stitch to the front of the fabric.
Step 3: Yarn over and pull up a loop, going back the way you came. Four loops remain on your hook.
Step 4: Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on your hook. Repeat two more times to complete the treble crochet.
Completed Front Post Treble Crochet (FPtr)

Now that you have mastered the Front Post Treble Crochet, you are ready to start having fun with texture! Use it for some surface interest on a pillow or create a bass-relief effect on a wall hanging! Or use this stitch for one of the modifications found in the PDF version of the Alpine Dreams Beanie to make a messy bun variation!

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and found it helpful! Until next time, keep practicing those stitches!
