More Mecha Then 2022
This year has been pretty great because there actually has been some mecha to talk about. It isn't just the second portion of The Witch From Mercury. There were actual shows that aired weekly and some shorter ONAs that came out too. I know there was Megaton Musashi and also Gridman Universe, but I haven't been able to watch them yet which makes me incredibly upset. I want to watch Universe so badly and I am just waiting for a more legal way to watch it. Hope it appears on Crunchyroll soon because otherwise I will just go crazy and have to go an illegal route to watch it. Though given how I waited a long time for the last two G-Reco films to appear on Youtube, I probably will just end up waiting for it despite my threats.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury Part 2
Yeah, The Witch From Mercury concluded with only two cours sadly. I wish that it was three cours in length to fill out and resolve all the ideas it brings up, but what the show did in two cours was pretty great even if it was so rushed. So many characters are well executed and thought about like Miorine and Sulleta with their parents and the larger political nature of the show, but so many were barely given any time to resolve or develop in ways they could have. The show did the best that it could and I love and appreciate all of that. Really should have written a review of this show at this point, but I still am not ready to do it yet.
Synduality Noir (Cour 1)
This show is a part of a multimedia project that is attached to a video game and this anime has been pretty decent. At least this first cour is because the second cour is coming out after I wrote this post and I don't have a solid opinion on it yet. But as a first cour when it comes to characters and world building with a general idea of a story before it goes into an adventure hopefully in cour 2, the show is worth it for all of that. A great sort of stand alone cour that could be left to its own devices.
Bullbuster
This show is one of the underrated shows of 2023. It feels so skipped, though it is a bit more complex than the usual sort of battle mecha series. It is about a small company uncovering the lies and deceit from a larger company that doesn't care about the crimes they are committing. The plot involves a small island that people had to vacate and it's up to Namidome to find out why monsters are infecting it, so that leads to some robot battles. But they aren't that good and the writing and talking heads regarding money and politics is what drives it. Not for everyone, but I really like it.
Gundam Build Metaverse
I don't have much else to say other than it's a celebration for the Gundam Build series' tenth anniversary. Build Fighters came out 11 years ago after all and that hurts to write. But it has a simple plot and characters that simply cover the themes of the show with fanservice from other build series characters. Plus, the metaverse is a part of it all too. It's enjoyable for what it is.
AMAIM Warrior at the Borderline UltraSteel Ogre-Gear
Amaim is a very mediocre mecha series from Sunrise Beyond and this is a short ONA directed by Masami Obari that is heavily separated from the original series besides some world building about it too. It is a pretty standard and effective war story about one veteran passing on his knowledge and experiences to a new pilot while the Japanese rebels slowly lose a lot of ground. It's an enjoyable hour of mecha YouTube stuff but nothing special either.
Thoughts About Mecha in 2024
As of writing this post at the end of the first seasonal outing of 2024, that being the winter portion, there is so much mecha to talk about. Gundam SEED Freedom came out in Japan and I unfortunately will watch it at some point in the future when it comes out so I don't have to pay extra money to watch it. Very much a Curucuz Island sort of case. This season also had the very good second portion of Synduality Noir and Bang Bravern has been a breakout hit in the circles I'm in. Metallic Rouge kind of counts as one in my eyes. Let's see, there is going to be a Grendizer thing coming out this year. Other than that, I'm not sure what mecha series are coming out but there are at least some things to talk about for next time.
