In the shadows of the mountains do great things grow. Even the smallest details at the base of the titans can hold real magic and beauty in its own rights with such majesty easily extending to much of the music that finds itself born before such awe-inspiring material even if they're not front and center to each given performance. The metal that has been coming from the greater Appalachian range has been some of the most interesting and promising in the American scene in my experience with there being tons of acts from plenty of different styles to really show us what they're made of to tremendous effect. With their eponymous debut, Shadowcloak is certainly perpetuating that very trend.
Any band's entry into the fray can be a nervous step for very understandable reasons, but some just exude confidence right from the beginning. After sharing the stage with many notable acts in the stoner scenes including Howling Giant just to name one, Shadowcloak's debut album is something that is the very definition of promising! Adorned with five tracks that take loads of influence from some of the great post-metal and heavy scenes that we're blessed with in the modern landscape, Shadowcloak already delivers an eclectic sound that is captivating right from the start with all the hypnotic qualities to keep you rooted in place even well after the work has concluded. Immensely competent at the contrast between gorgeous atmospheres that can just as easily give way to intoxicating riffage as it can heaviness with a mild infusion of psychedelia to really elevate the grandeur of the work at large, Shadowcloak has really put their best foot forward on just their first effort. This is a clear product of the influences that brought Shadowcloak this far in their run as musicians, but it's their clear ingenuity and tenacity that is propelling them forward. Far more than a weak creation grasping at the notion for recognition, Shadowcloak is already carving its path forward with real intent and capacity.
This record lays the path gloriously for Shadowcloak to seize its destiny for excellence as it continues to writhe and grow between the mountains of North Carolina as its legend slowly grows. I've nothing but confidence for Shadowcloak given everything that's been summoned forth in this debut with its follow-up not coming soon enough. Even it takes until those very mountains wittle away, I will wait and I can only ask you join my in my vigilance for my very bones tell me this will be a show not to be missed.
"Shadowcloak" releases on May 3rd!
