Maverick
I'm the pro. Always professional, always mindful of the press, and always doing the right thing.
My life is flashy and chaotic. I've spent the past few years doing everything I was supposed to, including smiling pretty for the cameras while standing next to the world's favorite popstar.
But now that's over. I'm yearning for a simpler life. I love racing, but the fame part I could do without.
I want a life out of the spotlight, and I want something real.
Cooper
I'm a fan—how could I not be?
And not just a fan of racing. I can't help but be swept up by the lives of celebrities. Wondering if they really have it so much better or if something is missing.
Now that Maverick isn't just that hot racer I've followed for years and is instead my friend, I'm starting to see the answer.
We always want what we don't have.
Rich and famous or poor and seemingly invisible . . . who actually has it better?
Where does true happiness actually lie?

[ I received a digital arc for an honest review]
The Pro vs. the Fan by Nicole Dykes is the third book in the On the Track series. Maverick has had enough of being part of an it couple and finds he still can't get a bit of privacy. The only moments he gets to himself are in the company of Cooper, the lovable conman at the animal shelter. Cooper has found himself friends with people he'd never imagined getting to know, his favorite being Maverick. Cooper's crush isn't as unrequited as he thinks but he gets friend-zoned for his own sake. Maverick cares far too much about Cooper to allow him to be raked over the coals by the media even if that means not being able to be with him all the ways he wants to. The two find ways to be together in private but the pressure in public may be too much for the budding couple.
Cooper has been a favorite of any reader of this series because he's the sweetest conman in all the land when it comes to getting all these professional racers to adopt animals. Maverick has fallen victim more than once and is okay with it as long as he gets to keep spending time with Cooper. I loved seeing the two together and watching them get to know each other as friends first and then more.
"You could never embarrass me. I can't wait to proudly show you off."
"Really?" I ask breathlessly.
"Yeah. Of course. Cooper, I'm the luckiest guy in the world. I know that."
My heart squeezes tightly in my chest, and I can feel myself falling for him.
I appreciate that this series is relatively low angst and although there are ups and downs for Cooper and Maverick they are reasonable and realistic. We get to see the boys from the other books come in and try their best to guide their friends towards the happiness they've found.
4 stars for Maverick and Cooper giving more than friendship a chance.
