For the longest time now, it has been the goal of many throughout the many different realms of death metal to bring naught but the highest level of glory to the classic veins of the genre be it through perpetuation via repeating what's already been done or carrying the torch into new directions while still managing to keep things fresh and innovative yet nonetheless uncompromising from top to bottom. Few are able to truly encapsulate all that's possible with the latter, but the underground at large almost always tends to recognize those who do achieve such a magnificent feat. With their second full-length album, Apparition does what extremely few can.
It's always a terrifying prospect - trying to make something new out of the old without compromising the feel or spirit of that original form. Failure can mean an insult to what you were trying to revere while success is certainly divisive amongst those who come before the finished product. However, it's in the case of "Disgraced Emanations from a Tranquil State" that I can't help but feel as though there's very little division amongst the masses about how well Apparition pulled off this monumental record. The sort of beast that many a death metal act dreams of creating even once in their run with all the twists and turns, wild sights, and nuances to go with the unbridled intensity of it all, we should not be shocked that Apparition has put forth a record that many are already considering an album of the year contender. I don't blame them either! "Disgraced Emanations from a Tranquil State" rips your soul out of your pathetic flesh prison with an old school death metal that is jump-charged by a modern songwriting mindset that allows atmosphere to creep in while never once allowing that to take the place of some solid old-fashioned brutality in the forms of riffs and more than little bit of technicality for good measure. Immeasurably dense, terrifyingly dark, and outright murderous from the very get-go, Apparition has crafted a nightmare realm the likes of which death metal is only granted maybe a handful of times in any given year. Where many can only handle a few of these factors at any given time, it becomes clear very quickly that we're dealing with certified masters of the craft. Last year saw Sulphur Aeon blow us away at every given turn in each track, and now it's Apparition's turn to do the same.
The run of Apparition hasn't been anything to look down upon thus far, but it is here that the act has tapped into something that's on a different level altogether. Methodical and all the more horrifying because of it, the whole of "Disgraced Emanations from a Tranquil State" is nothing to be denied in the slightest. This is where the boundaries of reality are twisted and diluted with only nightmares ahead for those who survive crossing over with Apparition the only salvation one may have to endure the horrors that are quick to follow.
