Morgan
When I left Birchbark angry and heartbroken, I vowed never to return.
Fate had other plans.
The father I hate had a stroke, so now I'm back in the Upper Peninsula to take care of him. The locals treat Dad like royalty, while Dad vacillates between open anger and flat-out ignoring me. Throw in my messy relationship with my brothers, and being in Birchbark becomes unbearable.
The only saving grace is Dusty, my childhood best friend. He's always had my back, save for one night ten years ago that changed everything. Despite my endless family drama, Dusty becomes my solace, and it's not long before our emotional connection becomes more. Dusty worships my body in ways no man has before, but more importantly, he's stolen my heart. Except Dusty's home is here, and mine is in Santa Monica, as far away as I can get.
While I'm battling it out with Dad and trying to hold the family together, my every impulse is to leave the first chance I get. But I can't leave Dusty behind. Not again. If I want a chance at real happiness, I've got to work through this anger and grief…even if the hits keep coming.
Morgan is a small-town, friends-to-lovers romance with all the feels, heat, and character development you expect from a Riley Hart novel. It deals with themes of grief, loss of a parent/sibling (off-page), and toxic family relationships.
[I received a digital arc for an honest review]
Morgan is the first book in The Swift Brother's series. This follows Morgan, the middle brother, as his returns home to face his past , the boy he left behind, and the open scars left on him from his unhealthy Swift family dynamic.
Ya'll these Swift boys are emotionally messed thanks to their toxic father. They definitely need to see a therapist. Unfortunately they don't so I guess the next best thing is Dusty. Dusty whose been in love with Morgan swift since they were kids . Dusty, who thinks of all three brothers as his own. When Morgan left 10 years ago it gutted Dusty, and after they finally lay eyes on each other, those years disappear. It's not all sunshine and roses, but the two of them realize the time they have lost and aren't about to repeat the past when it comes to the two of them.
"I'm right here, Morgan. I've always been right here. You just have to reach out and grab me."
We are given past chapters that show how deep Morgan and Dusty's connection goes, so when they are reunited it's easy for us to overlook that they don't waste much time before claiming each other. The intimate scenes between them are hot, possessive, and abundant. They can't keep their hands off each other.
"You are to me. When you got back, you said I'm yours, but you don't really believe it. I am, Morgan. I belong to you, and now you fucking belong to me too. There's no going back."
This story is so much more than their relationship, though. It's about young men hurting over the decisions of their parents. It's dealing with every emotion you can think of - grief, anger, regret, jealousy, and guilt. Slowly Morgan is putting himself right by facing his wounds, and he gets to feel hope for the future, joy, and love.
"But you're allowed to feel how you feel. And love is earned, so is respect, and like, it's not something people get just because they share the same blood as you."
Overall, Morgan by Riley Hart is a solid start to an emotional MM series. A small town ex-best friends to lovers romance filled with all the emotions, coming home, possessive main characters, family, mending relationships, and second chances. The youngest brother Easton stole my heart already, and I can't wait for him to start healing and finding peace.
