It's no secret that the very underworld of metal music is swirling pool of madness, intensity, and macabre beauty that can take many different forms depending on the situation and the vein that you find yourself in. Particularly, it's where things begin to morph the very fabric of reality that metal can really transform into something that few can anticipate. The reaches of death metal where things become quite mind-bending are where the underground really seems to consolidate much of that very power with there always being talent new and old to perpetuate that exact brand of madness. With its debut album, Nogothula puts forth a display that does nothing but justice for that streak of insanity.
At any given time, there is loads of burgeoning talent throughout all that death metal has to offer. It's only a matter of finding it, and once you do it can easily feel as though you've come upon a find that hardly anyone is aware of. When I was presented with the debut album from Nogothula, I had no idea what to expect, but nothing could have prepared me properly for the utter madness and chaos that's found within the nine eviscerating tracks of "Telluric Sepsis". Taking clear inspiration from some of the crazier efforts that the depths of death metal have been churning out for years now with all of the technical prowess and overwhelming brutality to match, this is an album that most certainly takes into consideration all that's needed to tear open a portal to a forbidden realm where the human's feeble mind in instantly driving to craze upon beholding such unfathomable knowledge. A constant whirlwind of blood, bone, and brain, to step into "Telluric Sepsis" is to leave this reality for another that seeks every fiber of your meager existence. From its riffs to haunting atmospheres and its chaotic yet masterful understanding of the instruments at hand, Nogothula has made an entrance the likes of which that cannot simply be denied lest its overwhelming power devour you when you least expect it.
Never once settling on one form for us to try and wrap our minds around, Nogothula knows what it means to keep the listener utterly enrapturing and wholly enslaved to the madness at hand. This is a brand of blackened death metal that is not to be underestimated in the slightest as "Telluric Sepsis" sets the stage for a truly fascinating act within the writhing corridors of the underground. Should Nogothula simply continue down those dark halls to open forbidden doors locked by numerous eldritch seals then I don't see how we wouldn't receive works that well and truly border on the edge of the human cognitive capacity.
