Community invited to the 10th Annual Jim Tracy 5K, Walk & Roll to Cure ALS on Sunday, April 28,
2024 to support the search for effective prevention strategies, treatments, and cures for ALS.
The ALS Network proudly announces the 10th annual Jim Tracy 5K, Walk & Roll to Cure ALS® on Sunday, April 28, at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. This annual event brings incredible energy and an outpouring of support for those affected by ALS in the San Francisco Bay Area. Participants are invited to join other members of the community for a family-friendly morning of celebration, exercise, education, awareness, music, food, and kids' fun.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a fatal, neurodegenerative illness that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. People with ALS lose the ability to move, speak, swallow, and, eventually, to breathe – all while their minds and senses continue to function. People who have served in any branch of the military
are diagnosed with ALS nearly twice as often as the general population. Currently, there are no known cures for ALS.
Jim Tracy, the inspirational track coach at San Francisco University High School (UHS), lost his courageous battle with ALS in 2014. Jim touched countless lives during his remarkable career, which spanned two decades and 40 seasons at UHS. The legacy that Jim leaves to the world and to the ALS community is to "never give up," no matter what the challenge. This family-friendly annual event was created in his memory and is supported by the students and the ALS Network.
Since its inception in 2015, the Jim Tracy 5K, Walk and Roll to End ALS has been a yearly opportunity for the ALS community to connect and fuel the search for effective treatments and cures for ALS.
The Jim Tracy 5K will be held at the meadow near Pioneer Log Cabin and Blue Heron Lake in Golden Gate Park (2 Blue Heron Lake Drive, San Francisco, CA 94118).
