The second in the Seven Sisters series, this book details the second sister, Ally.
The first thing to note, is that I listened to this on audio. So I have to avoid using a lot of names. Because I don't know how to spell them. This is the drawback with audios and why I tend to put out a note of caution when encouraging children to listen to books instead of reading them.
Thankfully, Ally doesn't repeat all the same things Maya, the eldest sister, did in the first book The Seven Sisters. But we learn about some of the events from Ally's view. There is much less detailing Ally's view of things, but we knew that she was away with someone on a boat when her adoptive father died and that she inadvertently witnessed the secret burial. So we receive details of who she was with, how they met and then how Ally ended up back home as well as a little more about what she saw and did whilst there.
The story then moves on to what happened to Ally after she left Atlantis and the details that eventually lead her to seeking out her birth family.
It is quite a long story. First going into the details of Ally's life and the drastic changes, but then her journey to Norway and everything that happened there. There are two historic stories. Of a young woman called Anna and the journey she goes on, as well as the story of Anna's grandson and how he fits into things.
To me, you could kind of see where it was leading. Ally's musical. Obviously she has some kind of connection to these well known musicians. Did this make the story predictable? Not exactly. I think there were various ways it could have gone. It wasn't entirely clear how Anna's story was going to fit into Ally's but then the same could be said of Maya's journey too. And the end result of this was far more satisfying.
How does this all fit into why Ally was adopted? It may be that there are never answers, but doubtless, there's going to be something to do with Pa Salt and a connection to Ally's family somewhere in there. He probably met someone in the family at some point, and the way he encouraged Ally to keep up with her musical talents suggests he knew all about her family. It might be that his connection was spelled out in the plot and I missed it, although I did note a mention of the Seven Sister. Just as with Maya, Pa Salt had a historical connection to her and her family that caused him to adopt her. Pa Salt clearly didn't adopt any of his daughters without reason.
Also the along the way, Ally remarks on odd interactions with her sisters which hints at the kind of thing that might be happening with them as they research their families. And what is this mystery connection to someone well known who died at the same time as Pa Salt?
I will definitely be reading/listening to more.
