Let me start this post by once again advertising tubi without any sponsorships at all. Tubi is amazing. If you are an older sci-fi fan that lives in the United States, tubi has so many treasures from so many generations of sci-fi shows that I can't help but love. Talking early Doctor Who, Farscape, and so many others. That is also the ad supported streaming service where I watch my tokusatsu and some anime on. You would be surprised how many good quality shows are on it and I can't help but dig deeper and deeper into what they have. Especially since this good film and others are on it too.
Blue Thermal stars the very eccentric and kind of lonely girl Tamaki Tsuru when she graduates high school to college. So this is her first time living by herself as a Lit Major who doesn't have anything to really push her or excite her. That is until Extracurricular day at her college where she was testing out the tennis club and accidentally hits a tennis ball in the direction of a very expensive glider. That hit pushes her in the direction of going to the Glider Aviation club meeting out in the field. Her first flight with the captain Jun Kuromachi really energized her in ways she never expected.
This is the typical sort of sports tournament kind of setup except its about pilotable gliders. Automatically makes it extremely cool. Tamaki is the girl who starts out at the bottom with the other beginners, but she has a natural talent of feeling the currents and streams in the air that pushes her further and further as Jun Kuromachi, the ace of the club, wants to pull away. The spectacle of it all adds so much to it. The arc of the film also involves her joining something and facing off against a jerk who is against her being there and then Tamaki just showing her stuff and proving she belongs where she is.
Those jerks are pretty solid characters themselves though. The first one's name is Daisuke who is assigned to take care of her when she first joins. He really tries to get her out of the club or finds every weak point because of her own failings until he starts to actually like her. Second one being her own estranged sister that learns to trust and accept Tamaki a bit more. Third is a rival that pushes both of them to do better. The fourth is a fake jerk that funds the college club they are in which pushes Tamaki to show she can win easily even as a first year.
My major complaint, which feels kind of minor, is that I wish this was at least a one-cour sports series. Possibly longer. It looks great on almost all levels because the general animation quality is good and the gliding scenes are pure spectacle. There is a cast that wasn't explored as much as it could even if I really like them and I want to know more about gliding. But for a film that is a little over one hour and a half, it's good stuff. Highly recommend watching it, so giving it a good.
