Book Review for "Demon Copperhead" by Barbara Kingsolver
My Review of "Demon Copperhead" by Barbara Kingsolver
Phew, what a tome! OK, so this is a retelling of "David Copperfield" by Charles Dickens. I haven't read that one, but it is on my list. I enjoyed "Demon Copperhead." The book hooked me in from the start and gave me a "Grapes of Wrath" vibe. There was some interesting and enlightening social history woven into the story and I could really identify with the characters even though I am British and have never been addicted to drugs. I suppose I identified with Mrs Peggot the most as she seemed like a kindred spirit!
Anyway, I fell in love with Demon as I read his story, and the book made me laugh more than it made me cry. I did get a little bit bored about halfway through the book and it seemed to drag, but then I reminded myself that this was the story of a boy's childhood through to reaching 18 and it wasn't going to be told in a few hundred pages. I am glad that I persevered and read it to the end.
Despite his tragic circumstances, Demon's story does have a happy ending, at least as far as reaching adulthood goes. You like to think that he goes on to live a long and happy life. I enjoyed reading this book mostly, but it didn't quite hit the deep spot in my heart.
About the Book
Demon Copperhead is a once-in-a-generation novel that breaks and mends your heart in the way only the best fiction can.
Demon's story begins with his traumatic birth to a single mother in a single-wide trailer, looking 'like a little blue prizefighter.' For the life ahead of him he would need all of that fighting spirit, along with buckets of charm, a quick wit, and some unexpected talents, legal and otherwise.
In the southern Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, poverty isn't an idea, it's as natural as the grass grows. For a generation growing up in this world, at the heart of the modern opioid crisis, addiction isn't an abstraction, it's neighbours, parents, and friends. 'Family' could mean love, or reluctant foster care. For Demon, born on the wrong side of luck, the affection and safety he craves is as remote as the ocean he dreams of seeing one day. The wonder is in how far he's willing to travel to try and get there.
Suffused with truth, anger and compassion, Demon Copperhead is an epic tale of love, loss and everything in between.
