Her small hands tremble and tears run down her cheeks. Shivering in the dark, damp storeroom, the little girl clutches her favourite toy dog. She cries out for help, but nobody answers. Her mother went missing last night and, as dawn breaks, there is still no sign of her.
Four-year-old Cleo shakes with fear as she tells the police that her mother, Darcie, was taken by a man on their way home last night. Darcie told Cleo to run and hide, and the last thing she saw was Darcie being pushed into the back of a car.
When police look into Darcie's life, they discover a drunken argument with her best friend hours before she went missing, a dark figure seen loitering near where Cleo was found, and a recent assault allegation against a customer at Darcie's work.
It seems like everyone around the young mother was keeping secrets, but Darcie had a dark secret of her own – one she hasn't dared tell a soul.
Did Darcie's deadly past finally catch up with her? And will she find the strength to fight for her life and keep her promise to return for her beloved daughter?

My Review
This is book #15 of the Gina Harte series. Whilst it is part of a series, it can easily be read as a standalone book. We find Gina and her team working on the case of a missing young mother, whose daughter is found hiding in a barn after seeing her mother kidnapped. The case doesn't leave Gina much to work with though and her team find themselves hitting dead end after dead end.
I really enjoyed this book and was hooked from the very beginning. I love Gina Harte's character and have followed her storyline throughout the series. Gina is a strong character who has been through a lot over the course of the series and if you're a woman of a certain age (like myself!) you can certainly relate to some of the things she has been through! The storyline is fast paced and is cleverly written with lots of twists and turns to keep you on your toes. The identity of the kidnapper is kept well under wraps and I have to say I didn't work it out until we got to the big reveal!
This is a story with lots of suspense and tension, and filled with secrets and lies. I really enjoyed meeting back up with Gina and her team and once started I couldn't put it down! Would recommend!
