Crazy Craig’s Picks of the Day: 1st June
Based on a series of plausible events in a regional Victorian town I swear, it was 5 years ago I was posting a tipping guide for the 1st of June. Hang on a minute, that was real. Alright, here we are on the first day of the southern winter…
Based on a series of plausible events in a regional Victorian town
I swear, it was 5 years ago I was posting a tipping guide for the 1st of June.
Hang on a minute, that was real.
Alright, here we are on the first day of the southern winter for 2024, with a nice old 2000km band of rain stretching across Australia after Perth enjoyed an Indian summer that lasted deep into May, and the highlights for this Saturday are primarily focused on the latest Group 1 chapters of the Queensland Carnival at Eagle Farm:
- The Kingsford Smith Cup over the 1300m, and I would note this is one of only 2 Group 1s held over 1300m, the other is the Canterbury Stakes at Randwick
- The Queensland Derby over the 2400m, as Autumn Angel becomes the latest filly to start favourite in a Derby, and based on the pitiful strike rate of fillies in Derbies, what could go wrong?
There's also the Group 3 Hyperion Stakes at Belmont, although I'll be steering clear of that race with a nice old dump of rain due to hit Perth on Saturday afternoon, there's also the Lord Mayor's Cup at Rosehill, the very same race that last week's Doomben Cup winner Bois D'Argent won last year.
Another interesting runner this weekend is a horse by the name of Lygon Street, a German-bred import for Kris Lees who will appear in the Race 2 maiden at Newcastle, and he'll carry 59kg and the substantial weight of being owned by none other than Lloyd Williams and James Packer...
Of course, the last time Williams & Packer owned a horse was the days of Lloyd and Kerry Packer owning Mahogany while he won several Group 1s during the 1990s, and let's not mention when he got nosed out of a Cox Plate by Octagonal.
Funnily enough, the favourite for that Race 2 is called Waverley, so you've got Waverley against Lygon Street... Two places Carlton supporters used to enjoy attending, and by sheer coincidence, they both had shithouse parking.
So it's on to Crazy Craig, and this'll probably be as forgettable as his last two Saturdays... so to distract you all, here's Elvis Presley!
P(r)ick No.1: Madame Odette (No.15, Barrier 1) E/W in Race 2 at Eagle Farm (BR2), 12:18pm AEST
1400m HKJC BM78 Handicap
Trainer: Tony Gollan, Jockey: Tyler Schiller, 57.5kg
Hello hello everybody it's Craaazy Craig TBFB, Scratchie King of Bairnsdale, and given I've well and truly done my arse in pursuit of charity since the start of May, there's to be no funny buggers this week...
This week is just straight BUSINESS, and first up, I've decided to adventure off to Eagle Farm to pick a horse named Madame Odette, a horse so boring that I couldn't even find anything to say about her!
To be honest, I have no idea who Madame Odette is/wa, given it appears to be a name that possibly comes about because the mare was sired by Churchill...
With a name like Odette, was she married to Pepe Le Pew?
P(r)ick No.2: Mirzann (No.15, Barrier 5) in Race 9 at Caulfield (MR9), 4:35pm AEST
2000m BM84 Handicap
Trainer: Chris Waller, Jockey: Damian Lane, 55.5kg
After 20 years since it was first released, it's finally back... Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Mirzann...kaban.
P(r)ick No.3: Celebrity Prince (No.4, Barrier 11) in Race 7 at Belmont (PR7), 3:35pm AWST
1200m 60+ Graduation Handicap Celebrate WA Raceday

You know who was a Celebrity Prince?
The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, and you know that Prince had a song that was a contender to appear as my CRAZY theme song....
LET'S GO CRAZY!
LET'S GET NUTS WITH THE WIZARD!
Enjoy your weekend folks, stay safe, stay negative, KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD, and remember, I'm Crazy Craig, and that's why they call me Craaaaaazy Craig!
