Well and truly, there are more than enough corners of death metal that need to be explored even as we find ourselves in an age of unfettered progressiveness that has seen the genre taken to new heights and lengths heretofore unseen. Much like with what we've seen within black metal, the experimental reaches of the genre are some of the last bastions of truly untouched and never-before-heard brands of death metal that we simply cannot deny. By nature, to be experimental is to go against the grain. Many have tried their best at embracing those ideals with few able to fully deliver on the concept. Joining forces in to make for a magnificent joint effort for what the style is still capable of.
Out of the gate, the reputation of both these bands precedes this split. In their own ways, Diskord and Atvm have carved out their own little corners of unconventional death metal that is constantly seeking to push its own boundaries, defy its own expectations, and discover new reaches of the sound that would otherwise go unexplored. Where both of these bands tread madness is all that is to follow, and that's when each act is going at it solo. Together, Diskord and Atvm make for a joint excursion into the swirling pits of insanity that death metal could never truly replicate even in the best of circumstances. Hands down, "Bipolarities" is one of the hardest to grasp and squirmy yet brutally unyielding pieces of death metal that I have ever come across. Even after losing my mind within its depths for what felt like days, this is a union of intensity that the underground is able to churn out only on occasion with both of these otherworldly creations delivering in heaps.
With Diskord offering four tracks of twitching, convulsing immensity that offers no reprieve between its meandering songwriting that is no less than erratic and the definition of unpredictable, "Bipolarities" is given that shot of schizophrenia that really ties everything together in the most unhinged form imaginable. It's the two tracks across just over twenty minutes that Atvm makes damn sure not a shred of sanity is left over, though. A viciously fast and breakneck descent in the deepest layers of madness that death metal of this variety can only pull off as you lurch and contort to the distorted rhythms that are simply improbable to ever bear witness to. Separate, these acts are forces to be underestimated. Together, however, they make for an absolute whirlwind of intensity, pure chaos, and progressive technicality that is not something to be denied. I doubt there will be a tome of psychotic dirges like this in quite some time with the combined might of both these forces nothing that should be taken lightly.
Unlike anything other there, "Bipolarities" is not an experience that's to be expected nor something that is to be anticipated in any form. Where many others sought to challenge the genre, it is here that Diskord and Atvm do no less than conquer and overwhelm.
"Bipolarities" releases on July 12th via Transcending Obscurity Records!
