Publication year: 1999

Publisher: Warner Books

Format: print

The book was published after the end of the TV show and Buchanan references a lot of characters and events from the show. In fact, it made me rewatch some of the episodes. I remembered Hugh Fitzcairn but I still watched a couple of episodes with him. I didn't remember the episode "Double Eagle" so I rewatched that one, too, and a couple of others that feature Amanda. As far as I know, the show isn't on any streaming service but luckily I own a DVD set.

The year is 1888 and the Immortal thief Amanda has just won the casino Double Eagle in a poker game from another Immortal. Duncan (MacLeod the main character) is with her but he has his own problems trying to convince Alec Hill to continue to live after Alec's mortal wife has died. However, Duncan's old friend Hugh Fitzcairn comes to the Double Eagle. To Ducan's surprise, the Englishman has an apprentice: Danny O'Donal who hasn't yet lived a mortal lifetime and knew only the basics of Immortal life when Hugh met him. They're bound for Yukon to dig gold. They convince Duncan to join the adventure.

The journey to Yukon takes over half of the book. They stop in a small town and have enormous trouble trying to get places on a ship. They entagle with the local people, including local criminals and, of course, a beautiful girl. Most of the story is pretty light-hearted, except that Danny has dark secrets in his past and he won't tell the others about them. The ending is very intense.

This was an entertaining story, if somewhat slow at times, aimed at people who know the series.
