Incipient Chaos – s/t

Often enough do we see black metal tap into the darker aspects of what metal has long been capable of (especially given that's just the basis for a large swathe of black metal), but it's only on occasion do we get an effort that actually manages to take that notion and twist it into something that has far more within it that's not just mere imagery or references. When we see an act come around that is actually able to tap into the more alchemical and esoteric tones of what black metal can be do we get acts that are able to bring forth material that's as fiery as it is loaded with potential. The final ingredient is obvious: talent. It all needs to be brought together with competency to make it work from top to bottom with Incipient Chaos's brand of just such black metal more than qualifying when it comes to the simple matter of talent.

Slowly honing your craft over a ten-year period as you show us what you're made of through the occasional EP and even a split is a more than solid way of building the foundation of your sound and showing people what you're capable of, and Incipient Chaos has done that very plan to tremendous effect. It's been five years since the underground last heard from Incipient Chaos, and it's now with its first full-length that this French act is finally ready to show us what it's capable of after making sure that its blade is as sharp as could be. It goes without saying that this album is positively deadly and more than capable of delivering the goods, slaying the competition, and tapping into a realm of black metal that has real menace in every given moment. Utterly menacing from the beginning and blistering all the way to the very end, Incipient Chaos has never been an act to underestimate. Yet, it's at practically every turn throughout this eponymous record that the band has topped itself in damn near every aspect to really show us what they're made of: unfettered darkness with an insatiable hunger. And, really, it is beyond fitting that Incipient Chaos would choose this as their self-titled record. The experience not only encapsulates much of what the band has always alluded to in ways of their massive talent and capacity but illustrates at practically every turn just how far Incipient Chaos has already come to the point that it wouldn't be a stretch to call the band one in the whole of the underground that we absolutely need to keep a sharp eye on at all costs.

This is the kind of madness that black metal has long had in some form or another, but rarely do we get it in such magnificent form like what we see here with Incipient Chaos. Tapping into the alchemical side of the genre with more than enough nuance, blasphemy, and raging infernos to catch the drift of any who would consider themselves a proper black metal aficionado, Incipient Chaos does nothing but conquer overwhelmingly so well this massive offensive.

"Incipient Chaos" releases on June 7th via I, Voidhanger Records!
