I should have gotten this out earlier because this ova was only available for the entire month of February. Though I do have to say, spoilers, this one feels like it only should have been a double length Lupin III episode instead of a 90 minute movie. This is the story of Lupin and his crew traveling to the fictional country of Doruenthe to rescue the master thief Finnegan for a large treasure hunt. The idea of other thieves traveling to the same country to break the guy out for their other reasons as well as Jigen having a connection with Finnegan, that makes it so interesting. Or should make it interesting.
So this ova goes the way you think it would until the obvious twist. The other thieves went into the large prison complex before Lupin and his gang got captured. Then Lupin's gang enters the facilities and finds a way to break the facility and rescue Finnegan. Easy, done. Of course, there is the reveal after the fact that Finnegan's cell has no security for it is ignored at first until Finnegan the lupin gang is split apart with Lupin ending up supposedly dead, Jigen is captured, Lupin is who knows where, and Goemon somehow was able to get away too.
The plot is just not that interesting or complex to be 90 minutes. Especially with the concepts of what is happening to people that try to break into Doruenthe's prison and why that country is getting funding out of nowhere. There is a plot regarding the royal family of Doruenthe being under house arrest and Finnegan holding the entire country hostage without anyone of that country ever noticing. Plus there was the opening where Lupin, Goemon, and Jigen are somewhat mad at each other or in an unsure stance with each other which gets revolved in the end. These are things that can fill out a film including the other thieves.
It just doesn't though. It turns out into a very easy Lupin movie or pair of episodes that have been seen before. We only get the bare bones characterization for the other thieves whose character designs are very expressive and interesting. It would be fun to get to know about them a bit more. Or actually go into more about the royal family being held hostage with a romance that is just there. Or something more about Finnegan and his connection to Jigen besides the surface level stuff. Are the people behind this one just manufacturing one just to get it out and not dive into any of these things at all? It's not that visually great either because it's just passable and easy to consume.
