The intensity of this series by Joseph Flynn has me reading as much about Jim McGill as I can. The political commentary made throughout the series is right on point, at times ahead of its time. Flynn is able to hone skills to turn this series from one of political thrillers to strong pieces of investigative work. This book swings the pendulum back into the political realm like no other, as presidential politics and the intricacies of a run for office become a key aspect of the book, while McGill dodges a threat from a world superpower. Flynn remains a great author in the genre and keeps fans on the edge of their seats.
I can only hope there are more novels to come in this collection.
Jim McGill has experience as a Chicago cop, so nothing much scares him or pushes the former president's henchman from his perch. He also lived through two terms as President Patricia Grant's time in the Oval Office. However, when he receives news from a young State Department official that the Chinese Government wants him dead, McGill is significantly rattled. It would seem the Chinese President will stop at nothing until McGill is removed, punishment for his meddling and foiling of a recent kidnapping plot.
As Beijing's plan for McGill becomes known to other higher-ups in Washington, McGill ensures he has the proper protection, while working out how to counter the attack. Tapping into his wife's knowledge and the insights of President Jean Morrissey, McGill comes up with a plan that could turn the assassination plot on its head, while stunning the American public.
With the American news cycle in constant flux and McGill never one to shy away from headlines, he devises a plan that is sure to garner some airtime and at least a few column inches. He begins laying the groundwork for his plan, as more evidence about Chinese's plan comes to light. Using a reliable third party, China hopes to neutralise McGill before he becomes more troublesome. McGill scoffs at the idea and prepares to put his plan in place…. he'll run for president!
Flynn remains connected with the varied and fickle views across America by his strong storytelling in this series. There is a solid narrative base, complemented by multi-faceted characters who carry multiple plot lines forward. Keen followers of the series understand the complex story arcs that drive the narrative. There are significant themes that develop throughout the story, some resolving and others emerging for reader. Flynn keeps the calibre of his writing high in this piece for series fans to enjoy.
Flynn provides strong plot points within the key chapters, while peppering asides in others. There is much of a political and mystery nature in the twists that emerge, keeping the reader on edge. The reader is tasked with amassing a great deal of information, both within the book and series in general, creating a requirement to stay attuned to the story. I can only hope this stays the same for any future publications.
Kudos, Mr. Flynn, for developing such a great series to date.
