Plot: A devoted daughter is attempting to figure out the cause of her father's passing.
Review: Ever since the release and (ongoing) success of the John Wick franchise, it seems like every studio has to try their hand at least once in creating their own "army-of-one" hero.
Is this a knife?
Some films and even television shows have managed to do so well, entertaining audiences with the likes of Nobody, Atomic Blonde and Reacher. But most others try and fail to hit the bullseye, grazing their intended targets (re: viewers) instead.
Guess which one Netflix's Trigger Warning is?
Let's dance. And by 'dance,' I mean fight. It's a metaphor
The film stars Jessica Alba (who I last remembered from the short-lived Bad Boys spinoff series L.A.'s Finest) as (what else) a solider/spy who is forced to return to her hometown when her dad dies, seemingly accidentally. Parker (she's deliberately given a masculine name as a plot point about how people assume Parker is male due to her "skills") doesn't believe her father's death was an accident and starts investigating. This leads her to (Trope#1), the racist town bully Elvis (Jake Weary). Turns out Elvis with the assistance of his (Trope#2) corrupt politician dad Ezekiel (Anthony Michael Hall) is illegally stealing and selling weapons and of course it's up to Parker and possibly her (Trope#3) ex-boyfriend and obvious future turncoat Jesse to stop them. Or not. I honestly found it hard to care either way.
The only reason I could come up with for why they would call a movie about a knife-wielding protagonist Trigger Warning, is because this movie may "trigger" viewers into wondering why they bothered to watch it in the first place. I wouldn't be surprised to find out ChatGPT had a hand in writing the script as the only slight saving grace here was poor Jessica giving it all she had as she tried to make this uninspired story engaging. A couple of the fight sequences also managed to add badly needed energy to the proceedings, but beyond that this movie is as barren as the deserted town it's located in.
Talk trash about Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer again! I dare ya! I double dog dare ya!
An exercise in mediocrity, Trigger Warning might have been considered entertaining if it was released 20 years ago. But as of right now, one can only hope Alba gets her hands on some much better screenplays in the future because this surely isn't one of them.
Sommer's Score: 5 out of 10
