Blurb: It can be hard keeping secrets in a tight-knit neighbourhood.
In a tranquil, leafy suburb of ordinary streets – one where everyone is polite and friendly – an anonymous note has been left at some of the houses.
'I'm so sorry. My son has been getting into people's houses. He's broken into yours.'
Who is this boy, and what might he have uncovered? As whispers start to circulate, suspicion mounts.
And when a missing local woman is found murdered, the tension reaches breaking point. Who killed her? Who knows more than they're telling? And how far will all these very nice people go to protect their secrets?
Maybe you don't know your neighbour as well as you thought you did . . .
Review: This is my third Shari Lapena listen this month and once again she has created a quite simply awful bunch of characters. I mean that could be a little harsh but they really are an unlikeable bunch. From the off as a reader you're introduced to a group of neighbours who seem agitated, a few of them are close but the rest, not so much. Or is it a case of keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
They really would shop in whoever to save their own skins. The break ins from the teen are a sideline to the murder mystery but it's intriguing how a number of things link.
This novel is based on Amanda the men in this neighbourhood are fawning over her the women are disliking her. But who has enough of a motive to kill her? What I loved about this was how many of the husbands were linked to her and how many who thought they were her only lover. It was intriguing and in part laughable, these gullible older men cheating on their wives for a pretty face.
Now this may well be my favourite of the three I've listened to so far. There are so many red herrings yet when you think about it, it's also kind of obvious. I don't want to say too much or to mention any specific characters because if I mention the character I'll spoil the reveal which came so close to the end of the novel. This one had me second guessing right until the end and even then I could not believe it.
There was so much suspense, mystery and anticipation with this novel. Which made me think instantly of Agatha Christie- I really must get back to reading those and I think I'm most definitely in the mood for more of these type of novels. An edge of your seat suspense novel that I listened to long into the night.
