After playing in punk bands in his youth, songwriter Kevin O'Donnell hit a dark period, selling off his electric guitars and forswearing music. He moved to New York, got involved in theater and scraped by in odd restaurant jobs. It was the pandemic that drew him back to writing songs, reviving his passion for storytelling and recording. He began slowly writing and recording again, and his the road with his family to continue his musical journey.
Be thankful that he did, because it's given the world stunning songs like his most recent single, "The Assignment". A sparse, acoustic lament with haunting background vocals, this is one of those songs that can quiet a room with its sonic layers and personal lyrics. About the song, O'Donnell has said:
"I needed an outlet for a lot of emotional stress I was carrying. I kept having this kind of silly thought about how maybe the reason I have these adult problems is because I missed a day at school when I was a little kid where they covered all these issues in depth. It's a ridiculous thought, but I kept playing with it and this theme of learning, and failing, and being a daydreaming student of life found its way into the song. It was a kind of surrendering to this idea of embracing imperfection."
The metaphor of feeling like you missed some deep lesson on life at some point, leading one to find oneself in "so many messes" is profound and one that universally resonates.
When I started writing this piece, I had only intended to cover "The Assignment". But, after listening to that track, I started listening to more of his songs, and all of them were just great. O'Donnell sings of loneliness ("These Ghosts"), the struggles of the rock and roll dream ("You're Still Living in the Ring"), and escaping your fate and living life while you have it (the beautiful, harmonica-laced "Run"). If you're a fan of artists like Zach Bryan, you should definitely be giving O'Donnell your ears.
