I'm delighted to welcome you today to my stop on the blog tour for superb and compelling thriller Boys Who Hurt (Forbidden Iceland 4) by Eva Björg Ægisdóttir. Thank you to Anne Cater and Orenda Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this excellent book.
About the book:
Fresh from maternity leave, Detective Elma finds herself confronted with a complex case, when a man is found murdered in a holiday cottage in the depths of the Icelandic countryside – the victim of a frenzied knife attack, with a shocking message scrawled on the wall above him.
At home with their baby daughter, Sævar is finding it hard to let go of work, until the chance discovery in a discarded box provides him with a distraction. Could the diary of a young boy, detailing the events of a long-ago summer have a bearing on Elma's case?
Once again, the team at West Iceland CID have to contend with local secrets in the small town of Akranes, where someone has a vested interest in preventing the truth from coming to light. And Sævar has secrets of his own that threaten to destroy his and Elma's newfound happiness.
Tense, twisty and shocking, Boys Who Hurt is the next, addictive instalment in the award-winning Forbidden Iceland series, as dark events from the past endanger everything…
About the author:
Born in Akranes in 1988, Eva Björg Ægisdóttir studied for an MSc in Globalisation in Norway before returning to Iceland and deciding to write a novel – something she had wanted to do since she won a short-story competition at the age of fifteen. After nine months combining her writing with work as a stewardess and caring for her children, Eva finished The Creak on the Stairs. It was published in 2018, and became a bestseller in Iceland. It also went on to win the Blackbird Award, a prize set up by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir and Ragnar Jónasson to encourage new Icelandic crime writers.
It was published in English by Orenda Books in 2020.
The critically acclaimed Girls Who Lie (book two in the Forbidden Iceland series) soon followed, with Night Shadows (book three) following suit in July 2022.
Eva lives in Reykjavík with her husband and three children and is currently working on the third book in the Forbidden Iceland series.

My Review:
Boys Who Hurt is the fourth book in Eva Björg Ægisdóttir's fantastic Forbidden Iceland series. Icelandic Noir at its very best, this is a tense and atmospheric thriller that takes place after the events of Night Shadows, the third book in the series. Fresh from maternity leave and moving into a new home with colleague turned lover Sævar, police officer Elma is back in a complex, well plotted thriller that reveals its secrets slowly, drawing on the chilling landscape of its small town Icelandic setting to keep the reader engaged throughout. Although fourth in the series, Boys Who Hurt could easily be read as a standalone, although I would recommend reading the first three books in the series first as they do add even more depth and character progression to what is already a brilliantly written and highly entertaining read.
This time Elma and her colleagues are investigating the murder of a man found with multiple stab wounds at his holiday cottage in the depths of the countryside, a shocking message discovered scrawled on the wall above him. Sævar, at home on paternity leave, is struggling to let go of work, but then a chance discovery in a cardboard box left behind by the previous owners, leads him to a diary that details the events of a long ago summer. Could it be possible that the diary holds the key to Elma's case in the present?
Once again the secrets held by the small Icelandic town of Akranes begin to be drawn to the surface, with Sævar himself holding on to secrets that could threaten to destroy his newfound happiness with Elma and baby Adda. As dark events from the past are unearthed and the case gets closer to being solved, is it possible for Elma and Sævar's relationship to survive?
After going back in time last year in brilliant standalone prequel You Can't See Me, the story is now firmly back on track in this fourth book in the Forbidden Iceland series. Skilfully translated by Victoria Cribb, Boys Who Hurt is a compelling Icelandic Noir thriller that is filled to the brim with intrigue and suspense. With a cast of characters I grow to love more and more with every book and an intricately plotted and addictive storyline that kept me guessing throughout, this is a dark and shocking read that once started I did not want to put down. With a dual timeline narrative, Eva Björg Ægisdóttir's writing is stunning as she deftly brings the threads of the story together.
With twists, turns, shocks and surprises throughout, Boys Who Hurt is a gripping, dark and atmospheric read that increases the tension slowly, moving the story forward towards a final, thrilling conclusion that, although ending this particular murder mystery, leaves even more questions to be answered when it comes to our main protagonists Elma and Sævar.
Building on what has gone before, this is a series that really is going from strength to strength and I can't wait to see where Eva Björg Ægisdóttir will take this fascinating cast of characters next. Highly recommended.
