For my first post of the day I'm thrilled to welcome you to my stop on the blog tour for terrifying psychological horror debut We Used To Live Here by Marcus Kliewer. Thank you to Anne Cater and Transworld Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
About the book:
The Turn of the Key meets Parasite in this eerily haunting debut and Reddit hit—soon to be a Netflix original movie starring Blake Lively — about two homeowners whose lives are turned upside down when the house's previous residents unexpectedly visit.
You let them back in. You shouldn't have...
Young couple Charlotte and Eve can't believe the killer deal they got on an old house in a beautiful yet remote neighbourhood nestled deep in the mountains. One day, there's a knock at the door. A man stands there with his family, claiming to have lived there years before and asking if it would be alright if he showed his kids around. People pleaser to a fault, Eve lets them in.
As soon as the family enters their home, strange things start to happen, and Eve wants nothing more than for them to leave and never come back. But they can't – or won't – take the hint that they are no longer welcome.
Then Charlie suddenly vanishes, and Eve begins to lose her grip on reality. She's convinced there's something terribly wrong with the house and its past inhabitants… or is it all in her head?

My Review:
Oh. my. word. What can I say about We Used To Live Here by Marcus Kliewer? It is a genuinely terrifying and mind-bending debut that chilled me to the bone. Dark and intense, nothing could have prepared me for the sense of fear and foreboding I felt while reading this book. Whatever you do, don't read this late at night in the dark like I did! It's scary, deliciously creepy and is completely and utterly mind boggling. And I loved every shocking, baffling word of it!
Young couple Charlotte (Charlie) and Eve can't believe their luck when they get a killer deal on an old house in a remote but beautiful location in the mountains. The house is in sore need of a renovation, so the pair begin the mammoth task of renovating it ready to be sold on at the first opportunity.
But then one day there's a knock at the door and Eve opens it to find a family standing there. The man tells her he lived in the house many years ago and would love to show it to his wife and children if that was okay with her? Eve, forever a people pleaser, pushes down her rising sense of unease and allows the family inside. But as soon as they're inside she is desperate for them to leave - but they can't seem to take the hint, making themselves more and more at home with every minute that passes.
As more and more strange things begin to happen, Eve begins to wonder if there is something seriously wrong with this house - or if it is herself that is starting to lose her mind…
I don't want to say too much more as this is one of those books that you really do need to experience for yourself. Marcus Kliewer's writing is stunning as he weaves a terrifying and atmospheric tale that has some genuinely chilling and spine tingling moments that make you shiver with fear.
We Used To Live Here is a horror story unlike any other I have ever read before. It's a psychologically terrifying brain tease of a read that really does keep you guessing, not knowing where the story is going to take you next or what horrifying spectre is hovering just around the corner. The scenes in the attic and the basement are particularly petrifying, the tension palpable as what lies deep within the shadows begins to make itself known…
Marcus Kliewer has written an impressive debut horror novel that is as mind boggling as it is chilling. It is a terrifying, spooky and ultra addictive read that I would highly recommend.
I shall look forward to the Netflix original movie starring Blake Lively, although I do think I will need to watch most of it from behind my fingers! 😱
