There are some bands out there that have always known what they're doing from day one and only know how to go up from there. The underground has always been littered with such acts but it can sometimes feel like a game of chance when it comes to which names rise and which ones stay in the darkness with only a select handful able to experience their glory. Carnophage has been an act that enjoyed quite a bit of success when it came out with its second album, "Monument", but it's in the eight years since that the name has understandably fallen out of the center stage. Now, back with real vengeance, Carnophage is poised yet again to be on the lips of many.
Having established their clear penchant for unbridled intensity in the ever-aggressive world of death metal, Carnophage could have taken their sound into literally any direction they pleased given it has been a long eight years since we last heard from them. The possibilities were endless, and what we're given here with "Matter of a Darker Nature" is naught but a fantastic furtherance of what the band was all but known for with the sheer quality, presence, and magnitude of what's put forth in these eight tracks nothing short of what one could expect from death metal that can only be described aptly by two simple words: unrelentingly brutal. Where it was before that Carnophage sought to show us what they're really capable of with a brand of death metal that's not afraid to implement more than a little technicality, it is throughout every given inch of this new opus of real menace that the act capitalizes on that very opportunity to the fullest. "Matter of a Darker Nature" sees Carnophage only tighten their already ironclad grip upon the scene with little to no hope to survival for any foolish enough to get in their without knowing consequences. Pummeling rhythms mixed with an attitude that's downright homicidal in its calmest of moments, this is death metal that we've absolutely heard many times before but it's through a tremendous understanding of their craft and more than a little nuance that Carnophage makes damn sure to leave a wild impression for the third time in a row.
Legions have come about in recent years to show us what all death metal can still be, but there's just something about the return of Carnophage that makes this particular iteration an all too rare delicacy. Hopefully it will not be yet another eight years before we hear from Carnophage again, yet it is until their hopeful return that we're left with even more material that is simply to be adored for its immense ferocity and outright terror.
