Where things begin to become murky and the very bounds of reality seem to matter less increasingly by the minute, that tends to be where we find the bands that are never afraid to push the envelope. It's in that same corridor where experimental material tends to find its way even if it's through extreme adversity and unlikely odds for it to finally come to light. Some bands find themselves perpetually within such chasms of the metal underground while some rise to the occasion and really become a menacing force. Defacement has been just such a rising act in recent years, and it's now with their third album that their status has been all but cemented.
A ferocious act that brings to the table black-death metal with an otherworldly yet no less than ferocious edge into everything that they summon forth, Defacement has been a name to know and arguably fear since day one. Where many seek to merely bring together elements of black and death metal for a concoction that can feel shallow at times, Defacement has always excelled at bringing horrific levels of depth to their craft with "Duality" showcasing that to the highest degree we've seen from this act to date. A constant barrage of insanity alongside surreal moments that are found in between the layers of the universe itself, "Duality" is an unparalleled slog upon the human psyche as Defacement makes damn sure with their corrosive extreme metal that the listener is marred from every given moment of the work. And yet, despair and darkness are not the only factors that are to be found throughout this monolith of intensity. It's in the rhythms and briefest reprieves that light is able to come through the cracks of "Duality" even if they are only fleeting, but it's in doing so that Defacement shows a multi-dimensional approach that has much to offer than what many in this corner of extreme metal could ever hope to tap into with Defacement pulling it off with the strength and mastery of veterans who have long sought such power.
The experimental approach is rightfully seldom used in the vast underground despite all that it can be utilized for and warped into, and when it's done right then we can really be met with material that's no less than incendiary for all that it dares to become. In no small way, Defacement has accomplished that yet again with the whirlwind blood and bone that is "Duality".
