Destino (2003)
Back in 2009 or so, I was able to see Destino at an art gallery. The short film was touring as part of a Salvador Dali exhibition but back then, I hadn't heard of the short at all.
And so I remember being pretty excited when I learnt that Destino was an unfinished Disney collaboration with Dali from 1945, interrupted by World War II. I remember being very curious to see how the high production standards of Disney would merge with the famous surrealism of Dali.
And it was pretty thrilling to see on a large screen in a gallery.
I guess that today, however, looking back on the 2003 CGI, I find it doesn't gel so neatly with the hand-drawn aspects.
Ultimately, I don't want to continue within the framing of the things that were a little disappointing, when compared to my memory of the short (and I think it's amazing that it was finished at all).
Still, I enjoyed Destino for what I imagined it could have been, as much as what it was. And the surrealism of Dali mixed with Disney animation is not something you'll see in many other places.
For a mere 7 minutes, I think this is worth a look whether you're a fan of either Dali or Disney.
3 Stars
