We are in a time where the heaviness comes in many different forms with every sort of vein having tremendous representation on a scale that cannot be defied or ignored for all that the underground has dared to execute. Especially when it comes to the technical and progressive reaches of death metal, we've seen a sort of renaissance that has seen all sorts of acts and craziness coming out of the woodwork to continuously show us what is still possible from a truly insane corner of metal. Despite being a newer name on the scene, Evilyn shows us what the sound can still be when put into fresh, capable hands.
Already overflowing with talent that has proven themselves many times over throughout many different reaches of the underground, Evilyn sets itself up for greatness without even playing a single note. Any given track of what's put forth in their first full-length album of "Mondestrunken" shows off the blistering talent in much of what it has always been capable of with the ferocity, technicality, and raw musical knowledge to bring it all together in a simply striking form that makes for a listen that's more than simply intense. Rather, Evilyn has crafted a singularly vicious effort that holds nothing back, goes out of its way to eliminate any and all who come before its might, and takes great pleasure in doing so. This is death metal that's surely erratic in nature, but the goal of "Mondestrunken" could not be clearer: ultimate annihilation. An obtuse and monstrous creation that stops at nothing before its specific brand of desolation is finalized well past the horizon, there is a dark sense of majesty to the grandeur that Evilyn deals in. It's the sort of terror that technical death metal can bring forward like none other with Evilyn certainly tapping into that familiar aspect, but it's evident throughout the whole of "Mondestrunken" that something far more sinister is at play. A devilish presence that's lurking in every given second, it's the colors and the gore of Evilyn's intoxicating performance that distracts you from a truly menacing factor that we don't get often enough in a sublime yet nuanced form. As such, "Mondestrunken" feels as familiar as it does alien.
While there's still plenty to be done throughout the whole of technical death metal, there's always room for bands to do something that they can call their own even if it's not overtly obvious to those who come before the work in question. For all that Evilyn has brought to the table for its first full-length album, I think it's safe to say that they've hit the nail right on the head with a powerful creation that is carnivorous to a tee but never once lacking in the departments of overwhelming menace and power. "Mondestrunken" is but the beginning of what's hopefully a string of successful offensives from Evilyn.
