Enough defaulting to subtle pearls over fiery opals, soft cashmere over rough rags hidden in my closet. Waiting for the right day to sing dissonant songs that rankle, being the woman-daughter-citizen deemed nice because silent.
Why do you care who loves whom? People are shoving diversity down your throat? And there's the head-turn that used to slice my vocal cords, the eye-roll scoff that used to seize my breath. Good. I've asked the right questions.
And you're vain enough to believe my struggle is with you. Foolish enough to think I speak in someone's defense. I sing selfishly, fighting the temptation to slip these clothes back into hiding.
