Evisceration and destruction are oftentimes the name of the game throughout much of what the metal underground throws around, and it's certainly something that we're all familiar with on an intimate level given how ingrained it is in practically every given aspect of damn near every style. It's in the dark realm of sludge, in particular, that we see those very concepts taken to extremes that can't often be seen elsewhere even in metal. A sort of sonic arms race is always underway within the abyss of sludge metal with all sorts of bands pulling out different tricks to bring forth heavier and darker creations. With their debut album, Maudissez shows it already knows how to throw its weight around.
Out of the gate, it's necessary to know that this is the kind of sludge metal that goes all-in. Not so much as a shred of mercy is to be had nor is there any semblance of salvation to be had for anyone caught within the typhoon that Maudissez controls with terrifying competency. Four tracks are all that they've brought forth for their debut album, but it's across the 38-minute runtime that this eponymous work makes damn sure to do more than leave a simple impression upon the listener. Rather, Maudissez is out the scar flesh and soul. There isn't a moment of this record that isn't positively dripping in an oppressive atmosphere that itself is carried with real menace to ensure that whosoever steps into the work is simply meant to have a torturous experience with the pacing of each track promising the most egregious patience as Maudissez works its dark craft. A clear defiance of all that religion can be, Maudissez has truly captured the essence of what it means to be blasphemous with every given inch of this record meant to laugh in the very face of those who claim to be of the utmost righteous cause. Maudissez has terrific strength in ripping down their false idols and raining fire upon all that they claim to be with a full arsenal that they wield with such ferocity that one cannot help but be greatly intimidating by the mere sight of it all.
If this is but the launching-off point for Maudissez, then I tremble at what they're capable of with more time to really hone their craft to become something that is well and truly to be feared. This is surely just the beginning of a streak of terror through the ranks of the self-righteous with all the intensity and spectacle that one could ask for from such a menacingly dark creation. Where many others shudder in fear, Maudissez absolutely flourishes.
