A formidable, cloaked warship is attacking spaceships inside and near the Cardassian border. Now, a distress call reaches DS9. The ship is far enough away that it will take several hours for a runabout to reach it, but Major Kira and Doctor Bashir will try. Unfortunately, they can only hear and watch as the warship attacks and destroys the smaller cargo ship.
The warship has attacked Cardassian ships as well and Gul Dukat is after the ship. Meanwhile, a mysterious veiled woman comes to the station. She's a Trehanna, a species where the women rarely travel and don't engage in commerce. But she's a widow and must finish her late husband's affairs. However, Odo feels that something is wrong.
This was a very good DS9 book and feels like it's set during the first season. It has mystery and action and also a thriller-like quality. The characters sounded like themselves. Each major DS9 character got their own POV except Jake who was barely mentioned in the story. There's also the chance that Commander Sisko must work together with Gul Dukat which is always fun.
The ending is a bit sudden but otherwise I quite enjoyed this story.
