For some bands, excellence seems to come almost as easy as breathing. In the depths of the underground, some are truly able to rise above adversity and any challenges that may come from being a newer name in the scheme of it all to quickly make a name for itself and climb the ranks at a surprising rate. Throughout the underground, we've seen a rise of just such acts that are able to tackle many different concepts practically out of the gate thanks to immense pedigree from previously established names. At this point, Oubliette has evolved past being such an act given their already-established sound, but it certainly adds even more weight to the power of their third full-length album.
Just looking at any of the line-ups that Oubliette has sported over the years, it's clear that this has never been an act whose talent and prowess has been anything to call into question in even the slightest. Having been consisting of musicians that have proven themselves many times over throughout many different corners of the underground, Oubliette has become a formidable name for some time now with the arrival of "Eternity Whispers" something that we all should have seen coming sooner or later, quite frankly. A terrific mix of black and death metal with a vicious melodic edge that knows no bounds, these seven tracks are just the kind of outside-the-box splendor that we could always use more of from its many different contributing musicians and mix that is downright deadly to the touch. While I cannot speak on the themes at play here, "Eternity Whispers" is a supremely melancholic record that manages to embody a ton of beauty and majesty into all that it has to offer with plenty of atmosphere to spare. It's black metal that is incredibly difficult to really put a pin in for all that it dares to be in such a relatively short amount of time. But by the end of these seven tracks across just under thirty-nine minutes, the devilish seduction of "Eternity Whispers" has more than worked its magic many times over to leave you stunned by the dark majesty at play here.
While Oubliette may not be an act that has been on the radar of many, it is single-handedly with "Eternity Whispers" that everyone should take notice of what's been brought forth here. Where many have sought to deliver black metal on such a scale that feels fresh and invigorating without losing oneself in trying to reinvent the wheel, Oubliette succeeds at practically every turn.
