The second quarter of 2024 is now (nearly) over, if you can believe it. Every quarter, I go over the books that I DNF'd and explain why I put these books down. I've found this makes it easier for me to track my DNFs and explain why I did not finish certain books. This process also helps me when it comes to figuring out authors or writing styles that just are not for me.
The second quarter of 2024 wasn't too bad, as far as DNFs go. There were only two books I did not finish between April and June.
Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver
DNF at: 25%
I tried to get into this book, but I just couldn't. The story didn't grab me and the writing didn't work for me. The characters fell flat. I thought a book about serial killers would be interesting, but I just found myself bored and annoyed when I reached the point I stopped at.
Haunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton
DNF at: 15%
I picked this book up because a lot of people were talking about it on social media. A lot of people seemed to like it, and I've been trying to expand my horizons, so I wanted to give dark romance a shot. I didn't DNF this book because of the characters or writing, though I disliked both, but because of the toll it was taking on my mental health. I'm reluctant to call books "harmful" but this book is harmful, given the way the narrative tried to justify and romanticize terrible things. I normally read further into books before I DNF them, but I couldn't justify reading another page.
