Blurb:
I met West Haven when I was eight years old. He taught me to play poker when I was nine, and we made paper airplanes together when I was eleven. He kissed me when I was sixteen. He was the best part about my family's summer vacations to Montana. He was the boy who stole my heart. I was twenty-three when life ripped us apart.
Years later, I'm breaking my vow and returning to the ranch, not as a guest but its new owner. West might want me gone, but even he has to admit the only way to save his family's legacy is with my help.
It's not easy working side by side and facing those old memories. But this situation is only temporary. We're at a crossroads. And as long as I don't let myself fall in love with West Haven again, maybe this is our chance to put those ghosts to rest. Maybe this time we'll finally be able to say goodbye.
My 4* Review:
Crossroads by Devney Perry is the first book in her new Haven River Ranch series. Set in Montana at the Crazy Mountain Cattle Resort which is owned by the Haven family. It is a slow burn, second chance romance between West Haven and Indya Keller. This couple were childhood friends who became secret lovers, but now circumstances have made them enemies. It has been four years since Indya last visited and now she is back.Their story is told in dual timelines and POVs which works so well as it is a love that grows over the years. There is betrayal, family drama, deception, secrets and lies that this couple have to face as well as the regrets, bad decisions, mistakes, grief and heartache both have endured. Their timing was always out of synch so can they finally be on the same page and have a future together.
"It wasn't fair that our roads crossed only once a year."
Indya met West when she was eight and he was ten when her family spent a summer vacation at his family's ranch. Their friendship developed over the years even though they only ever spent a week together. Her father loved the ranch so they tried to make it an annual visit but we learn through the flashbacks which years they missed and why. Her return causes a ruckus because it turns out she now owns the ranch.
West loves his life working with the cattle but does clash with his dad over how to run things. He has had to deal with family drama all his life so he and his brother Jax, are shocked by the secrets their dad has been keeping from them. Both are angry and confused over why she has bought the ranch. West had his own dreams and hopes for the ranch so feels that his future and legacy is at risk.
The spark between them is still there and all their feelings slowly come to the surface. Can they find a way to work together and do what is best for the survival of the ranch. She loves the place and wants to fix the problems they are having. She is determined to turn it around and make it successful.
The tension builds between the couple as old memories come flooding back for both of them. He is a proud guy so working for her is difficult but he soon learns there is more behind her taking over as the reasons she is there are slowly revealed. Her personal life is in a mess but she struggles to resist West.
We learn that life hasn't been easy for her either and she'd never forgotten West. He has spent years watching her leave and doesn't want to do it again. Will they finally get the chance to be together for more than a week. Will they both stay and be able to live their dreams together on the Haven River Ranch. There are twists and turns as the truth is uncovered and it is far more complicated than I expected.
The little things they did for each other over the years were lovely and I laughed at how clumsy she was. The end seemed quick so I liked that the epilogue gave more of them actually together. It ends with an interesting teaser about Jax and a member of staff for the next book. Overall a sweet start to a new series.
