This book describes how searching and reclaiming one's birth family is a long difficult journey, one that's wrought with pain and grief. Truth and reconciliation is about finding community.
The community of authors who wrote poems in this book were part of Sixties Scoop survivors. They suffered unfathomable atrocities in the hands of people who should have known better.
There are three purposes to this book.
*1. This book became a writing platform for individuals who wanted to share their story. That way, they can offer the mainstream public a chance to hear how assimilationist policies have impacted the Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
*2. This book is set to assist other survivors in going from silence (keeping their stories inside themselves) to strength (telling their stories), and to show that it's also possible to move forward in healing through their stories.
*3. This book is meant to heal hearts and mend lives. The Canadian government may have tried to destroy them, but they are still here. They survived and are stronger than ever.
There's something powerful about writing these stories. Each story became so cathartic for Indigenous Peoples.
