B.D.U is a project group spawned from MNET's reality show Build Up: Vocal Boy Group Survivor and consists of M.O.N.T's Bitsaeon, CIX's Seung Hun, One Pact's Jay Chang and trainee Kim Minseo. While I love the idea of a show focused on K-pop's often-underutilized vocalists, I'd rather the entire industry make a shift toward robust vocal melody. B.D.U's debut mini album promises a spotlight on singing. With this in mind, title track My One feels more like a bunt than a home run.
The song's gentle synth and sentimental melodies create a healing atmosphere that makes for an easy listen. I'm happy the group didn't opt for a straightforward ballad, but even with its sprightly tempo I want more from My One. Instead of head-turning vocal showcases, this sounds like a track you could find on the latter half of any boy group album. It's sung well, but the performance doesn't feel particularly notable. The track's calling card is a satisfying shift into head voice during the chorus. I wish this moment soared even more than it does. Where are the harmonies? The spine-tingling climaxes?
Overall, My One is a fine pop song. It just feels like false advertising given Build Up's mission statement. Maybe my expectations were simply out of whack, but I hope the guys are given more exciting material in the future.
